Obituary for Akiko M. Kuhns

Akiko M. (Matsuoka) Kuhns, 86, of Red Hill, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at Pennsburg Manor.

Akiko was born on July 14, 1933 in Hokkaido, Japan to Matsuji and Kitsu Matsuoka. She was married to her late husband, Ray F. Kuhns, in Tokyo, Japan while he was serving in the U.S. Army. She came to the United States in 1956 and became a Naturalized Citizen in November of 1965.

Early on she worked at the Cinderella Factory and Plummer Precision Optics before she worked for the
Upper Perkiomen School District for over 30 years, where she retired as the head cook. She loved interacting with all the kids while working in both the middle school and high school cafeterias. Her love for cooking and being around kids carried over to working as a cook at Camp Unami in the summer for many years. She loved going to Disney World because she could be a kid amongst the kids.

She was a member of the American Legion Association Post 184 and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She was an avid seamstress and quilter, loved to bake and cook for everyone and loved to go to the beach.

“Nana” will be greatly missed and in the hearts forever of her four children, Franklin Kuhns and wife, Greta of Barto, Mary Bartholomew of Red Hill, James Kuhns of Red Hill, and Michael Kuhns and wife, Shelley of East Greenville; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by a son, Daniel Kuhns; and grandson, Daniel Kuhns, Jr.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville, PA. Offer sympathy to the family at www.mannslonakerfuneralhome.com
