Obituary for Bernard A. Haines Jr.
Bernard A. “Hank” Haines, Jr., 97, of Richmond, VA, formerly of Charlottesville, VA, and Hatfield, PA, passed away on Friday, March 22nd. He was the loving husband of the late Doris V. (Kuhns) Haines, sharing nearly 40 years of marriage together before her passing in 1997.
Born in Philadelphia on April 8, 1926, he was the son of the late Bernard Arnold and Mary (Feusner) Haines, Sr. After graduating from Hatfield Consolidated High School in 1944, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during World War II, most notably fighting in the Battle of Okinawa. Hank was honorably discharged and he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1953. After working at Merck Sharp & Dohme, he then earned his Masters and PhD in Pharmacy from Purdue University in 1959.
Hank began a career in International Regulatory Pharmaceuticals, selling drug patents all over the world for Squibb Corporation first in New Brunswick, and then Lawrenceville, NJ. After working for Johnson & Johnson and Ortho Pharmaceuticals, he retired in 1988 and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia.
Hank was a Master Gardener and was particularly fond of orchids. He had an orchid greenhouse for many years and worked as a Garden Guide at Monticello while still living in Charlottesville, VA. He also loved to travel and took amazing trips all over the world. He spent the last 11 of years of his life in Richmond, VA watching over his grandson Jeremiah cheering him on in his young baseball career and other accomplishments.
He will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Melissa J. Sleeth and husband, Ronald and Jennifer L. McGahan and significant other, Alex Haugen; four grandchildren, Benjamin (Sarah) McGahan, Heather (Chase) Brudwick, Mitchell McGahan, and Jeremiah Sleeth; and a sister, Clara Haines. In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by siblings, Marguerite Evangelist, John Haines and Betty Edwards.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 29th at Palm Schwenkfelder Church, 833 Gravel Pike, Palm, PA 18070, with a burial following in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9:00 AM directly prior to the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home.
