Obituary for Douglas W. Smith
Douglas W. Smith, 86, of Harleysville, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at the Souderton Mennonite Home where he had been residing. He was the loving husband of the late Erta R. (Matthes) Smith, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage before her passing in July of this year. They are now together forever.
Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Wilmer and Dorothy (Koons) Smith.
Douglas earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Penn State University while also serving in the ROTC. He served his country proudly during the Korean War in the Navy. After his honorable discharge, he began a 40-year career with Container Corp. of America in Oaks, PA where he retired as the Manager of Customer Service.
Surviving are a daughter, Kirsten Trimble of Landale; a grandson, Christopher Trimble of Kitty Hawk, NC; a sister, Carole Ann Trout and husband, Stanley of Macungie; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Montgomery County SPCA, 1059 Sweisford Rd, Perkiomenville, PA 18074, where Doug and Erta’s beloved dog BJ was rescued.
