Obituary for Kurtis S. Weiss

Kurt Weiss of Pennsburg, Upper Hanover Township, PA, pursued his goals and his passions, living the life that he chose, until his death at age 71. He passed away on March 11, 2019, following a long and valiant battle to regain his health.

Kurt and his twin sister were born on March 22, 1947, to parents Herman and Vera Weiss (later Boykin) of Green Lane, PA. Ever a “Green Laner” at heart, he was raised for the outdoors. Early in his life, Kurt developed a love of sports, hunting, and the study of the American Civil War. All three of these interests came to define him throughout the rest of his life.

A 1965 graduate of Upper Perkiomen High School, Kurt enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1966.
He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War and a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. As a machine gun squad leader, he was involved in eleven major operations. During his time of leave, Kurt traveled to Hawaii, where he married Judy Walter of Sumneytown, PA. He then returned to Vietnam and served during the Tet Offensive. Corporal Weiss completed his military service in Quantico, VA, as an instructor at the Officers’ Training School, Marine Base Quantico, until honorably discharged in September of 1968.

Kurt and Judy raised their three boys in Upper Hanover Township, and celebrated 51 years of marriage in 2018. Kurt and business partner Ralph Mack became co-owners of Mack & Weiss Masonry Contractors and conducted business in and around the area until their retirement.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Kurt became a member and eventually president of the Green Lane Club, Inc., Sullivan County, PA. For his entire life this location afforded him a second home where he was able to hunt, trap, process maple syrup alongside his son, and roam the beautiful and peaceful Endless Mountains.

His great interest in the study of Civil War history, particularly his life-long study of Gettysburg battle strategy, fueled Kurt’s desire to share his theories and knowledge with others. He became a volunteer speaker on the subject of Gettysburg for various civic groups of the Upper Perkiomen Valley, as well as the Life Long Learning program, and guided field experience and leadership programs on the battlefield over the years for hundreds of students from Worcester Preparatory School of Berlin, Maryland, and from the Upper Perkiomen High School gifted students program.

Kurt’s own love of playing high school football led him to participate for over 16 years as an assistant football coach under head coaches Steve Moyer and Kyle Mirth at Upper Perkiomen High School. Drawing on his military experience and his studies of battle strategies, he attempted to instill in his players important qualities of leadership, teamwork, determination and perseverance.

Kurt is survived by his wife Judy A. (Walter) Weiss; sons Kent W. Weiss, Matthew H. and wife Rebecca (Himmelwright) Weiss and Adam K. and wife Rebecca (Johnson) Weiss; grandsons Kyle, Conner, Gavin, Brody, Liam, Trent and Owen; twin sister Kathleen W. Bieler and husband
Edward K. Bieler; step brother Michael A. Boykin; sister-in-law Helen JoAnn Styer and husband Eugene S. Styer; brother-in-law John B. Walter and wife Barbara; and nephews and niece Joshua S. Styer, John Walter and Kristy Walter.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home,
222 Washington St., East Greenville, PA on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to
