Obituary for Scott A. Fluharty

Our beloved Scott A. Fluharty, 64, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on January 26, 2024 at his home in Pot-Nets Seaside, DE with his family by his side. Scott’s life was a testament to strength, perseverance and unwavering love and his heart of gold has left an everlasting light for his family and many friends who surrounded him to hold onto.

Born in Phoenixville, he was one of five children of the late Ralph and Carol Ann (Miles) Fluharty.

Scott was a 1978 graduate of Boyertown High School where he excelled in woodshop and became a proud Eagle Scout of Troop 367. During high school, one of Scott’s first jobs was at the former Fagleysville Hotel. This job led him to meet the love of his life and wife of 43 years, Cathy (Krause) Fluharty. They married in 1980 and soon after they grew their family by welcoming their three children, Melissa, Kellyann and Ryan. The relationship he had with Cathy and his children was like no other. They shared an unbreakable bond; through the good times and the bad, they lived, laughed, and loved. He was the most loving, dedicated and supportive father and took the utmost pride in his children and their successes in life. Along with husband and father, he held many roles: brother, uncle, cousin, friend, but most recently, his favorite role was pop-pop. He adored his grandchildren, Jameson, Bennett and Bristol and being their pop-pop brought immeasurable joy to his heart. He showered them with affection every chance he got; whether that was sharing coffee and muffins, rides on the backhoe, boating on the pontoon, fishing, walks, belly naps, facetimes or just the longest and best hugs, he cherished the opportunity to be part of their lives. Although he was only part of their lives for a short time, he left a lasting imprint they will constantly be reminded of through the beautiful memories that were created.

Scott was a creative and talented woodworker, craftsman, handyman, and jack-of-all-trades who loved working with his hands. He had a passion for building furniture. He began his career working at Pennsburg Woodcraft and then in 1995 he and Cathy opened their own furniture business, Contemporary Designs, which they operated for 12 years. They then took on another business venture in opening Creative Home Furnishings on Swamp Pike in Gilbertsville for many years before moving to Delaware.

In Delaware, he found his niche in owning and operating the Seaside Gas & Grill located in Pot-Nets Seaside. This store brought him so much happiness. He loved the people and brought the community together with his friendly jokes and his contagious bubbly personality. He made friends with everyone stopping to fuel up their boats, eating a delicious breakfast, or enjoying a beverage at the tiki hut. Everyone was drawn to Scott due to his ability to keep people rolling in laughter because he could find humor in the most mundane life circumstances; he could bring a smile to your face and laugh along at you and with you. He was affectionately known as “The Mayor of Seaside”.

An avid fisherman and hunter, he loved all things outdoors. His happy place was far out in the ocean on his boats the Master-Baiter or the Seaside Slammer with a flounder or tuna on the end of his fishing pole or up in a tree stand surrounded by the tranquility of the trees and wildlife. He enjoyed times at his mountain house in Sullivan County that he owned with his best friends Mark, Jim, John and their families. Other favorite activities were partying with friends at Paradise in Pot-Nets, at the sandbar, fishing trips, trips to Canada, super bowl parties, family and friend vacations, or just simply being surrounded by his friends. He made his closest friends feel like they were his family. He loved them deeply and cherished every moment he had with them. His love of life was embodied by his mantra that working hard allowed playing hard and he sure worked hard and played harder with the ones he loved most. He always said "I never had a bad day in my life" and he inspired all that knew him to live by that example.

In addition to Cathy, his legacy will live on through his three children, Melissa Sockel and husband, Bryan, Kellyann Frazer and husband, Ricky, Ryan Fluharty and girlfriend, Ashley; three grandchildren, Jameson and Bennett Sockel and Bristol Frazer; siblings, Jim Fluharty, twin sister, Debby Brewer, Mark Fluharty and wife, Adriene, and Ken Fluharty; step-sister, Kim McQuillan and husband Chris; step-sister, Kerry Abare; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that are family.

When you think of Scott, celebrate the good memories you have of him. Remember him while drinking a seaside slammer, on a fishing or hunting trip, when you’re scared to do something (you know he’d be telling you to go for it), and most importantly, remember him when life seems tough. He was the epitome of a fighter and he will be rooting you on from Heaven telling you to keep fighting and pushing forward. He reminded us that life is fragile and short and should be lived to the fullest. That’s exactly how Scott lived his life. He will be missed more than any words could express but he will be forever in our hearts till we meet him again.

All are invited to celebrate Scott on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at the New Hanover Fire Company, 2154 Swamp Pike, Gilbertsville, PA 19525 from 1 to 4 PM. A time of remembrance will begin at 1:30. It was Scott’s wish that we laugh, reminisce, and smile together during this time so bring memories to share with his family and friends. As Scott would say “the more the merrier”.

In remembrance of Scott, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, www.kidney.org.

P.S. “Don’t let your meatloaf”.
