Obituary for Thomas J. Augustine

Thomas Joseph Augustine, former Philadelphia Police Officer and Homicide Detective, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2022. He was 76 years old. He was currently residing in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, in Florida.

He was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA to the late Francis and Emily (Brown) Augustine.

Tom was a graduate of Lincoln High School and then attended the police academy graduating in 1967. He began his career with the Philadelphia Police Department, where he was employed within multiple districts; including districts 26 and 39. He was later promoted to detective in June of 1985, being transferred to the homicide division a few years later where he worked with his partner Tony until 2005 when Tom went to the the Homicide Fugitive Squad. Throughout his time as detective, he was highly respected and most known for his work on reopening “The Boy in Box” case. He retired in December of 2006 as a homicide detective and deputized US Marshall after an accomplished 40 years in the criminal justice system.

After retirement, he moved into an ocean front condo in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL where he lived the good life of swimming in the ocean and pool, enjoying annual cruises, making leather satchels, eating out at his favorite restaurants and making new friends wherever he went; Tom never met a stranger. He especially enjoyed the company of his neighbors in the condo he lived; he would be a helping hand to anyone that needed it. Most importantly, he loved his family and cherished the time spent with them up north or when they would visit him in Florida. He loved being pop-pop and great-pop-pop Tom; his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought the most joy to his life.

His legacy will be missed and remembered by his two daughters, Kimberly Augustine and Patricia Braxton and husband, Ed; his six grandchildren, Matthew Braxton and wife, Taylor, Emily Rohrbach and husband, Randy, Zachary Braxton and wife, Emely, Harrison Mehl and wife, Aaliyah, Lindsay Braxton and Nicholaus Augustine; and his great-grandson, Rowan Braxton and two more great-grandsons on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Frances Marinucci. Tom will also be missed dearly by his lifetime friends Walt and Margaret “Peggy” West, and Bill and Carrie Wusylko. He is predeceased by siblings Judith and Frank “Buddy” Augustine.
