Frederick George Mann, Sr., of Severna Park, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor, died July 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 70.
Born in Philadelphia to Samuel G. and Mildred S. Mann on January 20, 1955, Fred was raised in East Greenville, Pennsylvania with his three siblings. He married Julia Gardner Holladay in 1981, and they settled in Maryland, where they raised their family.
An outstanding student, Fred won a full Rotary International scholarship to the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, where he became Valedictorian of his class in 1972. He graduated summa cum laude from Bucknell University, and continued his studies in mathematics and statistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, attaining master’s degrees in both.
Fred was recruited by the Department of Defense to work in cryptological mathematics. In this role, he served for 41 years under eleven administrations, and received special commendations from US Presidents and leaders abroad for his outstanding work. Fred mentored countless younger mathematicians, and taught at University of Maryland University College during the 1980s.
Fred delighted coworkers, family and friends with his dry wit, and relished solving puzzles of all kinds. He enjoyed coaching basketball for the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, and later, for the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association. His interests included hiking with his wife, golf, contract bridge, history, chess, reading, and following sports of all kinds, especially the Baltimore Ravens.
He is survived by his wife, Julie Mann; his sons, Frederick, Jr. (Arden), of Liberty, Missouri, and Thomas, of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Edward, Arthur, and Calvin Mann; three siblings, Cynthia Mann (Randall Teteak); Sheri Slonaker (Carl); Samuel G. Mann, Jr. (Lorraine); and four nephews, a niece, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Fred were held at 11:00 a.m, Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Severna Park. Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care was in charge of services.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory can be made to the Fuel Fund of Maryland, or the MOH (Maryland Oncology Hematology) Cares Foundation.
