I've known John Edward (as he is known to the Borchelt relatives in IN) since I was a child. My mother is a Borchelt by birth and John Edward's cousin. I remember first meeting him at the annual "Borchelt Reunion" and thinking how much he looked like his brother Paul! Then I met theboys! Mike was closest to my age and I remember looking forward to the reunions to see him again.
The reunions seemed to stop and we drifted apart. Then the summer of 1967 I came east to work at the UCC camp at Huff's Church. And low and behold, found John Edward's family again! And just around the corner so I could walk over and visit on my day off! I was thrilled to learn they were heading to Batesville the week end my job ended and were willing to take me home!
Looking back I realize that was MAJOR! They already had three boys in the car - and they would add another adult and baggage!!! I only remember having a great trip - not 12 hours crampted in a hot car in August! I'm sure John and Thelma were ecstatic to see the Indiana welcome sign at the end of that day. But it is a great memory for me. And Donnie, I think of you always when a coin is tossed!
I have not been it touch as much as I should have been over the years. I know John Edward and Thelma go back to Batesville for the annual Sunday School Picnic at our "home" church there to see family and friends. My mother told me this morning this is the weekend for that event. John will be missed by family and friends in IN as well as PA.
