Obituary for Oliver L. Cleaver

Oliver L.  Cleaver
Oliver L. Cleaver, 91, formerly of Palm, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Country Meadows, Bethlehem. He was the husband of June Laurine (Bartholomew) Cleaver celebrating 65 years on marriage on April 2, 2014.

Born in Upper Hanover Township, Palm, he was a son of the late John Oliver and Myrtle (Lachman) Cleaver.

He was a 1947 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College with a BS Degree in Chemistry and a brother of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity.From 1943 to 1946, Oliver served in the U.S. Army, 66th Black Panther Division, attaining the rank of Sergeant, during World War II. While in the service he attended the Colorado School Mines, Golden, CO studying engineering under the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) for seven months. He and his division were awarded the Distinguished Bronze Star Medal.

From 1947 until 1949 he was a product control chemist at the Firestone Plastic Division in Pottstown. In 1950 he joined the family business, Cleaver Sons, a wholesale egg and poultry business, becoming part owner in 1953, as the 3rd generation. The business then incorporated in 1965, becoming Cleaver Inc. and he retired in 1973 after 23 years of employment. He then worked for the US Postal Service from 1974 until 1984 as a substitute rural mail carrier for the East Greenville Post Office.

Oliver was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Pennsburg, the 66th Black Panther Organization, the Phi Kappa Fraternity, Zeta Chapter, the American Legion Post #184, East Greenville, the Upper Perkiomen Senior Citizen’s Center and the Pennsburg Golden Agers.


Surviving along with his wife are two sons, Gary Cleaver and wife, Christine of Easton and Keith Cleaver and wife, Eileen of Allentown; three grandchildren, Kyle Cleaver and wife, Caitlin, Brian Cleaver, and Amanda, wife of Carl Schumacher, Jr. and a brother, Donald G. Cleaver of Philadelphia. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Pauline M. Young and his step-mother, Edna Schantz.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington Street, East Greenville with Rev. Charles E. Romanowski officiating. Burial follows in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hill. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing from 10 until 11 am Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.
