Obituary for Gerhard A. Martin

Gerhard A. Martin, 89, husband of Elizabeth A. “Betty” Martin, of Green Lane, died Monday at Life Quest Nursing and Rehab Center. He and his wife celebrated 67 years of marriage on September 8, 2010.

Born in Burkhardtsdorf, Germany, he was the son of the late O. Albert and Helene E. (Leistner) Martin.

He was a World War II Veteran, serving as an Army Air Force Engine Mechanic.

He was employed for 37 years with Superior Tube as a tool maker until he retired in 1988.

He also was a life member of the Green Lane Fire Company and served 22 years as Fire Chief and 31 years as Financial Secretary. He served as an ambulance driver for 15 years and served as a Borough Council member and as Green Lane Mayor. He served the community with relentless devotion and selfless public service. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sumneytown.

Surviving along with his wife are a son, Michael T. Martin and wife, A. Sue of Pennsburg; a sister, Erika Kleinbach of Harleysville; three grandchildren, Michael G. Martin, Kelly D. McCracken and Beth A. McAllister and four great grandchildren, Joseph, Michael, Nicholas McCracken and Alan McAllister.
